Julian Edge University of Manchester, UK

Non-judgemental and critical discourses for personal/professional development

Workshop 1: Cooperative Development

This interactive workshop will introduce the use of non-judgemental language in exchanges between colleagues, where both colleagues focus on the development of the ideas and plans of only one of them. Rather than exchange ideas in a pair, one partner tries to carry his/her own ideas forward, while the other partner encourages him/her by demonstrating acceptance and understanding. This produces an unusual and potentially powerful dynamic. Participants craft their own next best step forward by searching inside themselves. Outcomes can include individual professional development and an increase of collegiality among those people working together. If you want to do a little reading about this work before our session, you will find a short article of mine attached to this message.

·   Article 1: Edge, J. 2003. Collegial self-development. English Teaching Professional 27: 58-60.

Julian Edge University of Manchester, UK

Non-judgemental and critical discourses

for personal/professional development

Workshop 2: In search of the hybrid

The learning of language is an ability common to all humanity, but teaching is an activity that is rooted in a variety of contexts. I suggest that what we, as teachers, are looking for are ways of teaching that respect and take advantage of our human commonalities and our contextual differences. That is to say, we need to develop hybrid approaches to our work. In this workshop, we shall explore how we can well use the international literature of our field in this endeavour. We shall also take a critical look at what we mean by such terms as theory and practice and the relationship between them. We will take a case-study approach to the topic, based on the following article:

·  Article 2: Zhang, X-Q & Head, K. 2009. Dealing with learner reticence in the speaking class. ELT Journal 64/1: 1-9.

In order to take part in this workshop (Workshop 2), you need to have read this article. As you read, ask yourself  or even better, discuss with others at least the following two questions:

· What can I learn from this article, methodologically, as a teacher?

· What can I learn from this article about how to use the international literature of our field?

Please come to the workshop ready to discuss these questions.

I look forward to working with you, to learning from your participation in these workshops, and to seeing what kind of hybrid approaches make sense to you individually and as a group.

Anne Burns, Ph.D.University of New South WalesAston University, Birmingham

Action Research

Workshop (1.5-2 hours)

Exploring your classroom through action research

This session is designed for teachers who are interested in knowing more about action research and how to do it in their classrooms. It will be interactive and participatory and will take you through some steps to begin the action research process. We will be looking first at the meaning of action research, what it is about and why it can be appealing to teachers. We will then look at some processes for doing action research and you will get an opportunity to share ideas about issues, puzzles or challenges in your classroom that you would like to explore further.  We will then look at some ways that you can begin to focus your ideas and to learn more about your students, yourself as a teacher and your classroom.  There will be several opportunities in this workshop to share your ideas about teaching with other teachers and to develop some new ways of understanding what goes on in your classroom.
